Resource: How to Text Message Parents to Reduce Chronic Absence Using an Evidence-Based Approach

This toolkit (PDF, 105 pages) provides background and actionable resources about how educators can text parents and caregivers as an effective strategy for reducing chronic absenteeism. The toolkit is designed to help district leaders and staff:

  1. Consider goals and priorities for using text messaging to communicate with parents about student absences.

  1. Understand the attendance data collection procedures and information technology (IT) infrastructure needed to implement a texting strategy.

  1. Consider whether the text messaging strategies used in the Parent Messaging Study are feasible to adopt and implement.

  1. Set up a text messaging system using the district’s student information system and (if appropriate) a short messaging service (SMS) vendor.
