Impact of Behavioral Health Conditions and Treatment on Older Adolescents and Young Adults

New Online Course from SAMHSA: Managing Anger
This free online course uses a cognitive behavioral approach to working with angry clients. This course covers a range of topics, including how people respond to getting angry, how to manage anger from people with traumatic brain injury or post-traumatic stress disorder, and how to assess anger and readiness for anger treatment. The course may be useful for behavioral health service providers, human resource and other managers, school teachers and administrators, and professionals working in the criminal justice system.
National Training and Technical Assistance Center for Children's Mental Health
The National Technical Assistance Center for Children's Mental Health serves as a national resource to support and strengthen the capacity of states, territories, tribes and communities to transform their mental health systems to meet the diverse and complex needs of children and adolescents with or at risk for serious emotional disturbances and their families.
New NIMH Strategic Plan Aims to Focus, Accelerate Mental Health Research
NIMH has issued a new Strategic Plan for Research, which updates the strategic objectives of its 2008 plan, with a focus on balancing the need for long-term investments in basic research with urgent mental health needs. The plan includes four strategic priorities which will guide the institute’s research for the next five years:
- Define the mechanisms of complex behaviors
- Chart mental illness trajectories to determine when, where, and how to intervene
- Strive for prevention and cures
- Strengthen the public health impact of NIMH-supported research
PACER Center's Technical Assistance on Transition and the Rehabilitation Act (TATRA) Project
The Technical Assistance on Transition and the Rehabilitation Act (TATRA) Project offers Parent Information and Training Programs funded by the Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA) a variety of services to help them achieve their goals. Individualized services for each center are identified in technical assistance plans on an annual basis.
Preventing Suicide: Following up After the Crisis
This article describes SAMHSA’s National Suicide Prevention Lifeline Crisis Center Follow-Up Cooperative Agreements, which support crisis centers within Lifeline’s network in systematically following up with Lifeline callers to check in and follow up on treatment referrals. It also discusses ongoing program evaluation results, which suggest that following up is an effective suicide prevention technique.
Podcast: Tips for Helping Children and Youth Cope in the Aftermath of Disasters
This podcast identifies common reactions of children and youth to disaster and trauma, discusses helpful approaches to support young people’s recovery, and presents examples of how communities that have experienced traumatic events—such as the shooting incident at Virginia Tech—have used coping strategies to promote resilience.
